If we are talking about the creation of large multi-monitor softproofing system, then the result will largely depend on used panels, its main features (especially backlighting) and precision of calibration/profiling. In theory, identical monitors calibrated using the same targets should show no difference for the same image. But in practice difference will always be present even if you will use the same (not used) model of monitor. For such a proofing system should be used high quality pro-grade monitors which are manufactured using the highest standards.
Such a multi-monitor proofing systems are produced by ICS for Press Director.

Personally, I don't use any multi-monitor proofing systems. So I don't have experience of setting up such proofing system.
Monitor for color critical work I'd recommend is o_n_e of these:
- NEC SpectraView series
- QUATO Intelli Proof series
- EIZO ColorEdge series
Any of mentid above manufactures has its own calibration software for their pro-grade monitors:
- NEC SpectraView II
- QUATO iColor display
- EIZO ColorNavigator
For non professional monitors I prefer to use basICColor display and/or ArgyllCMS. Btw, QUATO iColor display is based on basICColor display.
I don't know if there is a software solution for setting up multi-monitor proofing system, but I think it should work if you'd calibrate every monitor separately using the same targets.
