Never, ever use Optima.. especially the bold

    I joke.

If you are a beginner read Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works by Erik Spiekermann

Then read Robert Bringhurt's The Elements of Typographic Style

and here is a reading list from Jason Santa Maria: http://jasonsantamaria.com/reading/category/typography/

    strongly suggest to check http://www.thinkingwithtype.com

Ellen Lupton, moderator of the site, is one of the typography gurus now.

you will see lots of major concerns you have to know as captions, to create good typography.

it is a lot more than font decisions :)

Watch the Helvetica documentary by Gary Hustwit. Nice to see how pro's that are against and for Helvetica defend themselves.

(while you're at it, check out objectified and urbanized also by Hustwit, great documentaries!)

I second the Bringhurst recommendation. Look at annuals in a well-stocked local library or arts-specific library to see where the field is right now and where it's been (The Society of Publication Designers and Type Directors Club have great ones). And just keep designing!

In my experience, learning some History of typefaces helps a lot. Knowing how a type was created in the first place and in which context just makes a lot of things make sense.

Try to take inspirations from other fonts, then write it in a piece of paper and make some concepts. That's what I do when I make some prototypes of my handwriting concepts

http://fontsinuse.com is an extremely good directory of classic typefaces in use, good to stick to these if you're stuck on what fonts to look at
