TIP!! Opening Newer Version AI Files...

    Hi,
Not to shore if this has been covered already by anyone but here we go...

Now and then I receive an .AI or .EPS file from a Client/Printer which has been generated in a newer version of Illustrator which I cannot open.

Just drag it into Acrobat Pro, it will open and then you need to export it as required file. SIMPLE!

Note: Artwork should always be double checked but I haven't had an issue yet :P

Let me know if you have a better way than this (besides upgrading, lol).

To open in Acrobat the .AI file should be save in Illustrator as PDF compatible

To open in Acrobat the .AI file should be save in Illustrator as PDF compatible, otherwise it will not open.

There is another option i use to do

    1. Take new Document
    2. File Place ai art work as a line file
    3. Embed the link ...... Cheers

Only PDF version include in AI file will be used. If AI file saved without "PDF Compatible" option, Acrobat will not open, even palce as link in AI. Object outside artboard not appear too.
It usefull in some case but not absolute safe.

If there is a chance to ask customer/studio to save AI as uncompressed file, do it. This way you will save yourself a lot of troubles converting that AI file to your needs.

Simple, but wrong: doing that, you don't open the .AI file, but you open the associated PDF file in an hybrid .AI file... so, of course it can works only with hybrid .AI files, those that are saved with the "PDF Compatible" option.

Another tip to use an EPS file newer than your Illustrator version, is to create a new document in Illustrator and import the EPS file in, embedded.

(doesn't work with all versions, but when it works some features are lost... for example, all the layers are lost!)
