True, it is better not to have to have a bad logo logo. But not having logo is not an option: makes you invisible.

I guess it depends on the business. For example, some restaurants and gas stations I've seen don't have a logo. You can often find little mom and pop shops without them. Obviously the really successful businesses have them, but a lot of smaller businesses I've seen operate on a name only basis.

I disagree with you, MisterPink. In my opinion the logo is just one part of the identity and, even though we can argue it is a step stone which should tell us a lot about the company, it is sometimes not as necessary as traditional design seems to think.

Nowadays, there are quite big companies who have more than one logo (Personal, an Argentinian cellphone company, for instance) and some others whose identity is reinforced in the concept of their entire branding system.

On the other hand, there are really well known brands like Coca-Cola who reinforce the symbolic logo on each campaign.

Anyway, I'm not saying it is always like that, nor am I saying logos are not important... I just think it all depends on the context, the client's possibilities and intentions, and the designer's wit/creativity to make a concept (out)grow a symbol.

I'm not so sure, look at the first google logo... nobody really liked it, neither for the type or color. But look what it becomes.

    Sorry for my bad english

I agree with those who wrote down stating on the advantages of having a logo. It identifies the brand and it easily communicates to the audiences with a single look.

partner it with a great tag line and you're one step ahead.

Company without logo is like person without face.

I totally agree. Its like a website - many good restaurants have poor or any at all. People always say: if your customers dont find your www in the first pages of google search - your bussiness dont exist. But in my opinion, if you have excelent quality service/products, people will find and go to your place even if its in the middle of nowhere :)

Hahah, this made me laugh. Simple but a very true statement. Having a logo is about 75% of your brand.

I think its better to have no logo than an ugly logo... When i'm browsing the internet i see al lot of logo's i wish i had never seen...

it's better to have just your name in a nice font than having a (ugly) 300$ logo

It is almost impossible for a company to NOT have a logo, but it could be an interesting experiment!

How professional does your business look without a logo? I'd say none...

Also keep in mind sizing issues for print or web use. One company's logo I work with has strange dimensions and it's a lot of extra work trying to fit it in where it needs to go. They originally had it designed over 10 years before and didn't think of the future uses. They weren't willing to redesign the logo and it's still a lot of work designing around it, but everyone recognizes it so it's strong for their brand.

Even small cafe or shops have their own logos, a company without a logo is a huge mistake. A nice, extraodinary one will be the first impressions to the customers, contacts (and even rival companies). But between having a bad, ugly logo and having none, I'd prefer the second option.

I try and incorporate a logo into their business name rather than the opposite way round, that way, you're not trying to cram a whole lot of writing into a single graphic.
