i agree. sometimes a good CI is better than (or becomes) a logo itself.

lately in a workshop at our university, we discuss the same thing, our prof. dropped in a cultural or even more a religious aspect. he said that in every christianity church, after you passed the long floor in the middle the holy cross is in front of you. it acts like a logo. but for example the shinto religion don't use a symbol to pray to. everywhere around us are essences they pray for but not one thing one symbol. maybe the afri-coke bottle is enough. the product is the soul, but the bottle gives a shape. nothing more needed to pray for?

I think theres a huge difference

Recognisable logomarks are incredibly powerful and provocative. I think its impossible to imagine a world without them. We depend on recognisable marks every day. A world without logos would make brand values very difficult to communicate, and customer trust / loyalty would be next to non-existent. Attaching so much to a simple visual cue is a fundamental feature of humanity - don't you think?? :)

Hey, sweet-darling, imagine you don't have a name. It feels the same to a corporation to do not have a logo.

Urban Outfitters doesn't have a logo, so I don't think it's the logo that is important. More the branding than, a specific element.

    depends..

if youre a well established company with a good presence with stores or online then your url or address will do all the work.. Unique branding can work too.

    *gasp*

No logo? Not acceptable for a professional business! How do you, as a business, make yourself easily identifiable to your audience?

I think with todays fast paced world - it is more relevant than ever to have an identifying mark for your business (or even, as a designer, yourself).

doesn't the company makes the logo, not the other way around?

look at google. god awful ugly logo. It seems to do fine.

of course having a great logo means never having to change it. look at coca cola versus pepsi. I can't even think off hand what the current pepsi logo looks like :)

    other great logos: IBM, Apple

It's provocative to tell clients that logos aren't important. It gets them thinking about the wider identity question. And then, the larger ACTION question: let's act like we'd want to be recognised for.

Obviously logos play a key part in the constellation that is your identity. But challenging that is good, too.

No logo – no identity – no competition – no money.

A good logo never hurt anybody. However, I'd rather have no logo than a badly designed one.
