    Thoughts about logos

In a world full of signs, does anyone need a logo.
Or, with other words, who needs a logo?
To have no logo, is it the same to have a logo?

It's crazy to have company without having a logo! That's the first step to branding any company. Corporate Identity is huge!!!

i think the real question is whether the companies logo/type/mark is a 'good' one or not - because the company has to write its name in some way shape or form therfore does that constitute it having a 'logo' ;)

Valid question. It's hard to stand out with all the other signs (and logos). But then again, not every logo is supposed to attract your attention. They are designed to be noticed by their target group.

Do you (as a brand) need a logo? If you want to be noticed and remembered then sure.

as a brand, it would be a nice experiment to get rid of the companys name and logo.
what would happen, if the product design is brilliant in a visual way, but no name is sitting on the package? only what is inside. would you buy it?
if there is one brand which is acting like this this could be a hit, but if there are many,
    i don't think so.

I guess you're right. If you are an unbranded coffee house that made it its thing to be the coffee house that has no sign/logo/brand up it might be considered cool and authentic by a lot of people. People would recommend this noname coffee house to friends by describing how to get there and all is well. Like you said, this concept would probably collapse, the moment more coffee houses in that area decided to "go noname".
Simply because you couldn't tell them apart.

At that moment, branding would probably become necessary again to make sure no other noname-coffee-house benefits from the good image that you build up with yours?

the funny thing is that we evolved from symbols just to go back to them, not using words.

Every business should carry a logo most especially if you have your own site a logo is needed whether you like the idea of putting it up. Always remember that a logo should represent your company, the brand you are carrying and for this to be effective it should resembles your product, service or the name of your business.

I think every business should have a logo. And businesses with terrible logos should get that fixed!!

I believe everyone/everything should have an Identity not just a logo...

A solid communication identity is the best for your target to acknowledge that you are talking directly to them and waiting a reply.

A greater identity is important, but a logo should show all of that in a "condensed" format.

    Of course!

What I was trying to say is that a logo all by itself looses a lot of strength and shuts many doors when it comes to communicating effectively

An entity must communicate properly for its market. This communication technique is the representation of the brand. It can be achieved with or without a logo per se (and in some very specific cases, the market might reject an entity with a logo), but either way, the entity's value system needs a channel for communication. There are numerous other points of interaction beyond a logo that can be leveraged. Many potential experiential aspects come to mind, for instance. That said, while continuity of market communication is what is ultimately important, it would be a difficult proposition for a large entity to avoid a logomark.
