Some general graphic advice needed - starting a new job

Two months ago, the company I worked for went bankrupt and I'm about to start a new job at a rival company. This job is largely the same (working with Kodak Preps, ApogeeX and creating printing plates) except that I will also have to do corrections to artwork and create PDFs from these. This used to be done by freelancers before I arrived, so my boss relies on me to decide what software to buy to let me work as well as possible but this is a very small company so I can't just go wild.

So far I have the following:
    - Adobe CS5.5 Design Standard (upgrade from 3)
    - Adobe Acrobat Professional 9 (I can't stand X's fixed layout)
    - Enfocus Pitstop 09 or 10 (we can buy 09 from the auction of my old company)
    - a PC workstation (yes, not a Mac)

And then the rest is what I'm wondering about. Do you recommend any specific plugins or software besides these?

For example, I know I need some tool to create barcodes but the only useful tool that exports with EPS (it HAS to be EPS or vector, images are useless since they can't be easily resized) is Barcode Producer which is incredibly expensive for what it does and I think my boss would look at me funny if I asked for that much money just for a barcode program - and Barcode Toolbox no longer works with CS5+ I heard?

So, do you guys/girls have any advice?

I'm in a similar situation. Is the boss ok with cracked software? I built my own i5 hackintosh and even have Esko v7 working on it now (thanks Print Root). This sw includes barcode creation (the best!). I have W7 and W server 2003 running in Parallels in Lion and even works fine with only 4gb of ram. So far, so good.

Well I'd rather keep it all legal - at home I can experiment with cracked stuff but except for fonts (because it's impossible to purchase every font a customer sends us to do corrections) we license everything at work.

I did have the eye of using Logmein to connect to my PC at home and do certain stuff there that takes too much money to buy at work.

it seems like you got it under control, there isn't much you cant accomplish with the creative suite, pitstop, font management and tons of fonts

A good font management program can do wonders , especially if your workload is getting extreme.

Yep I got Suitcase which is pretty solid. I'm having a great handle on things except that I have to do a lot of converting from the old Mac to the new PC. The PC just has too many advantages over the Mac to not use it, though (the Mac is ancient, a new one with similar specs would cost three times as much, ApogeeX client for 3.5 is very unstable and buggy on Mac, Preps 5.X on Mac sucks, etc. etc. etc.).

The Xtream path plugin is the most wonderful thing in the world if you use illustrator

    Barcodes

I use barcode producer 6 for vector barcodes, it will generate from a text file.

Also I use VMware or Bootcamp and create VDP in Printshop Mail. There are others that are better but it works fine for me.

    Good luck Epoch.

Oh you will probably wnat to get a copy of the Adobe Font folio as a started if you have very few fonts.

You might find trans type and/or Fontographer of benefit as well

What does corel draw do that can't be done with the adobe suite?

it's a real question, i just dont know what it can do.

For the correction, (and we still have those kind of things at work), a Q2Id plug in can come very handy, or the pdf2iD, if you dont have the basic files (those kind of boring stuff keep coming at my work).
