I use Quark Xpress since 1987 but in recent years also use InDesign; I preferred Xpress for some kind of jobs like a book with text and many photos and InDesign for jobs with a vectorial graphic or text and less photo because it is very slowly with many pages...

Indesign is the industry standard over here (Europe), so if you work commercially I would advice to use Indesign.

I prefer InDesign because it integrates with other Adobe products and new options such as Alternate layout is brilliant.

I was a die-hard Quark fan until Indesign came along but quark has stood still while Indesign has progressed. Admittedly I use the quark keyboard settings in Indesign.

Indesign over Quark... any day. So much more functionality in Indesign. Although, I guess it depends what you're using it for too. I use to use Quark a lot years ago. Don't know what the newest version is like, maybe its better.

Even the current versions of Quark still feels clunky. Of course nothing can be d about that without alienating the die-hard Quark users.
That doesn't mean that InDesign is the shining beacon of usability. But it's the best we have available so far.

I usually recommend to friends to first try both software. Have a feel and decide. Both software are great. However if you are working in a prepress, you have no choice but to learn both regardless which is best.

InDesign! lol. I know many prefer InDesign because there is some nostalgia attached to it. However, InDesign seems to be the choice of many printers and graphic designers. You not only have the possibility to integrate InDesign with a lot of the Adobe programs, but it is really easy to learn and use it. It is no wonder that InDesign is the industry standard.
