I started with Cargo which is great, but then after creating a profile on Behance I had to put my works once again and do everything twice everytime I posted a new project. One on Bh and one on my Cargo website. So I went with Bh Prosite which is simple, clean and great because what you add on Bh goes also on you website.

100% Behance, it's good to spread your work across multiple platforms. But Behance also has a large list of 'served' sites. Like TypographyServed or BrandingServed. There are a handful of them. Essentially some of the best work in that category is chosen from the Behance portfolio, and posted to these sites which are affiliates. It is great exposure and can really pump up your views.

As well I just think it's great that it has such an easy to set up portfolio and for free. I believe it's around 9 bucks a month to have your own URL and website set up in relation to your behance work. Once you update on Behance it automatically updates your website, very streamline and saves a ton of time!

    weebly.com

I am print related designer, and have no idea of web - when i found weebly i said: AMEN!:) They offer templates that you can customize to fit your needs. There are free and paid options. If you want you also can buy domeain from them, because in my opinion someting as of weebly.yourname.com looks amateurish.

Behance is great, i do agree, but in my opinion it is more to compare your work to others, to see do people/colleagues like your stuff... But to show your portfolio to client you definitely needs your own site.

I like Cargocollective. The templates are really nice and you can change them according to your wishes extensively.

If you don't want to have cargocollective in your adress you can buy a domain and point it to that adress instead.

Also, there's a new one called "Dunked" (dunked.com). I've yet to try it, though.

Just to add another voice to what seems to be the consensus here -- Behance is great (go Pro if you can), but your own personal domain/site is invaluable, especially for regular freelance work. I've had clients that for some reason seemed much more willing to go to "xyzsite.com" rather than "behance.net/xyz."

I would recommend against using something like tumblr because it's hard to retroactively edit your projects (i.e. if you choose to represent a book project with a still photograph but later feel a .gif is the best way to show all pages). I recently set up my website on Squarespace and it's been great. Some universities have special deals with Squarespace that give students half off during their first year using the host, so make sure you sign up with a .edu email if you have one!
