Illustrator for me it's the best way to make a layout, usually i split the work between illustrator and photoshop, i don't know any webdesigner that use fireworks!

photoshop for me - cannot get the hang of Fireworks - no matter how many times I'm told its better for web work - I think its much easier using the frames animation in Photoshop than trying to work out what is going on with Fireworks!

as fireworks has the vector tools that makes it so much easier to do certain things it is for interactive design more than what photoshop is. Fireworks is like the union of illustrator and photoshop. the best of two worlds.

I would vote for Photoshop since it is more recognizable by the industry nowdays. Beside, it works best with editing photos.

    Photoshop or Fireworks?

In fact, the target group of each one of these 2 software is different and they should not be compared to each other.

I do a mix, I use photoshop and illustrator in some drawings.
The fireworks is a very good software but I have not adapted to it.
    I prefer photoshop.

    one more thing!

I don't think that FW is garbage or out of date, some professionals use this software because they have more skills with FW
