Fireworks is too easy for gif animations, but nowadays I prefer Photoshop.

My friend did some things in Fireworks three times faster than I did it in Photoshop.

Fireworks would be great had it been updated, too. It's great for many things (like having Ps+Ill in a single software), but also full of annoying disfunctionalities. To name just , the swatches are global, the same on all projects. If you eliminate them all, by chance, you'll have to recreate them, by .

    depends.

I think it depends on what industry you want to go into. Photoshop is used for heavy photo-editing, photo compositing, etc. an example would be Movie posters.

Fireworks used to be amazing for web design, until Adobe bought it and slowly stopped working on it and made it horrible.

Photoshop is the new king since then...

The problem is that Adobe just passed it along, from when it bought Macromedia, up until now. They didn't add lots of essential stuff, and they didn't change many obsolete or useless features in it (such as global, application-wide, swatches).

However now they've introduced Muse (site making without coding skills), and the three Edge tools (Reflow, Code & Animate) as a kind of an experimental HTML5 replacement for Flash, Fireworks, and maybe even Dreamweaver (though they are still around and updated). Photoshop and Illustrator can now generate CSS code, when selecting assets in the scene.

It's kind of a moot point now, isn't it? Anywho ... I just couldn't ever get into Fireworks.
