Photoshop or Fireworks? Which do you prefer

With the acquisition of Macromedia, Adobe has brought Fireworks into it's line of CS products. I was having a discussion with one of my buddies at work, and he seems to think that Fireworks is the "de facto" design tool. I wanted to get a professional opinion on this. So what do you use? Photoshop? Fireworks? GIMP? Some other program?

I wouldn't really compare the two, unless you're talking about web stuff, then I'd say Fireworks but only because it cuts down on a few of the steps involved in slicing etc. It's not a bad program, but I've always imagined it as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash had a wild night and then Fireworks was born.

In my opinion both are very good programs, each focusing on a particular area that excels. Unquestionably my favorite is Photoshop, but if I had to work on a web design I choose fireworks as has been noted before.

    Fireworks???
    I've never used ...
I use PS for work on photo editing, and use IL to work with vector graphics.

It's hard not to use Photoshop - it is easy and flexible. At the same time FireWorks is more into cutting and slicing ready elements into images which will be used as parts of web page or flash site/application/etc

fireworks has the disadvantage that it do not support colorprofiles.
if you open pictures with wrong profiles it cannot change the colors
like PS it does with the colormanagment option.

Photoshop is the best image manipulation software ever. Fireworks is the best software for web design graphics since beta version. That's why Adobe ImageReady dies after Adobe-Macromedia fusion

Yes, that's a major issue, at least could have support for RGB ICC profiles
