markzware q2id does a great job, i could only find a rather old version, maybe you can use it anyway.

Indesign CS5 can open Quark files, but the quark file needs to be "backsaved" to Quark 4 if it is a newer quark file version - q2id is a much better solution IMHO

There is a limitation : InDesign can open ONLY mono-lingual Quark 4 files.

If you try to open a multi-lingual Quark 4 file in Indesign, it will fail... and you will have to open the file in Quark 4 to resave it in mono-lingual mode.

You have 2 solutions: 1 - to use quark to pdf converter, then pdf to quark converter
2 - to use Q2ID from the Markzware to convert.

I think that nr. 2 is the best solution, but the other is useful too.

You can convert your Quark Express files to pdf and import to Indesign, also you can use Illustrator to open your Quark Express files for editing. hope this helps

Guess you mean "use Illustrator to open your Quark PDF files"...

Again, Illustrator can open PDF files, but Illustrator is definitely NOT a PDF editor and its use generates many issues... so it has to be used with great cares to edit PDF, and only in case of emergency...

If you want to use a PDF as intermediate format, better use Acrobat + PitStop to work on this PDF!!!

It's a little complicated. You should convert quark document to version 4.0 (since quark can save only 1 lower version so you need to have quark 8 7 6 5 installed)

I had similar situation and I converted the quark documents to pdf and after that i downloaded software pdf to indesign. It's not 100% functional but it really saved my ass

As mentioned before, there is a plugin called quark 2 indesign. It works nice. One thing to keep in mind is to always check the text if its still correct when you have converted from quark to indesign. I got a version for indesign cs4, still looking for the newer one.

Or the old fashion way, convert the quark file to version 4 and open it in indesign. There is also a plugin to convert pdf 2 indesign. I think someone already shared it with the community.
