I currently use an Asus 27" monitor:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236103

I have never had an issue with it. The color is vivid and almost true out of the box. I have also mounted it (there are screw holes in the back to do so) freeing up a lot of space on my desk so that I can draw while I design.

Best for me is the Japanese EIZO CG series. Unbeatable hardware for quality, color stability and fidelity. (I am an art director and also do preprint consultancy. I used to have Lacie CRTs as well for a long time)

I second those that prefer Dell monitors. They're what I use in my home office and even though I'm working with relatively low-end models (not UltraSharps), they're a delight for the eyes and I'm absolutely fine with their color reproduction without having to do too much calibration.

Definetely go for an Eizo CG series if you have the budget. One of the most advanced and solid hardware you can find.

There has been some ultra-high resolution display (~185 PPI).
    For example: DELL UltraSharp UP2414Q.

I use Dell u2410 and also Asus pro Art PA246Q and very happy. When used with spyder or i1 calibrator is great

    Eizo monitors are perfects.
But for a cheaper price you can get a LaCie 324.
They're becoming hard to find since LaCie stopped the production, but they cost 30% less and offer hardware calibration.
I'm hoping i still can get a LaCie soon.
