My pair of Dell Ultrasharps display colors exceptionally well.

Hey, it all depends on your budget and the kind of work you'll be doing. For some a decent monitor is $300 Dell, some other people tell you that it doesn't make sense to buy a monitor under $1000... anyway, you should have your monitor calibrated, the factory settings is not the best... (especially on the cheaper monitors)

I'm in love with my Dell Ultrasharp U2713HM. Excellent for designing and coding thanks to the rotatable screen

I can also recommend Dell UltraSharp 2713H. I use it with my MacBook Pro, but got heavy pixelation. This is a known issue, but heres a fix in case you decide to get one: http://embdev.net/topic/284710. After I did this fix the monitor is perfect:)

I'm using Apple Cinema Display now for 10 years, it was more expensive, but good investment for what I'm still getting.

Try to find Dell Ultrasharp U2711 - it's much better then 2713. It's heavy, stable, professional. I tried so many of them and the only one which is better is NEC spectraview, but its price 2,5 times higher. U2713 is newer but it has worse quality comparing to 2711U. Absolutely sure

    Eizo and Quato

Apple monitors are very good but, in my opinion, the screen has too much glare. It can be very uncomfortable for design.
I recommend the "Eizo" and "Quato" brands. They are very good and varied prices.

Make sure you go for a monitor that has a IPS panel. IPS panels are great for colour accuracy.

The Dell Ultrasharp monitors are great IPS panels. Big plus is the matte screen that prevents glare and reflection.

The Apple cinema displays are also IPS panels, however they are super reflective and cast a lot of glare. Not great for working long hours.

When it comes to 27" displays, U2713HM is a great price/performance choice.

For design work, 144 Hz vs. standard 60 Hz makes absolutely no difference.

If you have the budget, I would take a look at the Eizo cg276. You also have the NEC (I forgot the number)
