    it really depends on what you are mocking up if its print work just print and cut it
    with larger print work tiling is an option if its huge print work (billboard) just mock it up digitally through photoshop.

    Web or app stuff could be d pretty well in keynote/powerpoint

    pictures (bitmap) with photoshop ..... Illustrations (vectors) with Illustrator ....... Texts with Word .............. The layout (and this is the most important part) with Indesign ............... should anyway have a good foundation

    I use Illustrator as well. I've found that creating it in vector format lends itself to not having to redesign something down the road should I want to resize it, etc.

    There's lots of little layer tricks that can take awhile to figure out on your own.

    Print and sometimes assemble each piece.

    Usually just assemble the envelope though. :p

    I, too, prefer physical mockups for digital. Of course they cost more money and time in the beginning, but it makes sense to see what your product will look like in real life. I had a situation where a digital mockup didn't come out nearly like how I expected physically.

    I found something called "live surface". It works with Illustrator Layouts and provides live-mock-ups in a spererate window. I have not worked with it yet, but it looks cool.
