Change the .cdr file to .ai , The most perfect way: use CorelDraw X4 open .cdr change to .pdf, then use Illustrator open the .pdf file.

    TO artemisia:
As far as I know you need Corel for this... I suggest to convert it to EPS instead of PDF etc. (there is better compatibility in conversion).

    One MORE:

As I remember there was a weak trying: coreldraw 8 or 9 for MAC! (Classic).
But it was terrible instable. So you can save the PC corel in 8-9 compatible, than open it with COREL for MAC :))))
(maybe i can find it on some of my old archive CD-s)

I constantly get Corel files and haven't found a good solution to the problem. Usually I ask the client to save to .eps or pdf.

Yes, it is possible... but not recommanded, and you'll have to keep two important things in mind :

1° Illustrator is NOT a PDF editor, so when editing a PDF with Illustrator you have to be very careful,

2° a PDF has a structure that is different of an Illustrator file and needs some cleaning to be use properly as an Illustrator file.

    solution

    If you are MAC user.
    1) install an virtualbox (vmware, virtualbox, or so), install Windows XP ou greater.
    2) define an share folder, and put corel files there
    3) install coreldraw x5 trial
    4) start coreldraw x5
    5) analyse document (vector + raster files) if so, export raster files to any file format like jpg ou tiff, or even psd if theres transparency. Leave all vector elements in file, save as AI file format.
    6) back to MAC and Illustrator. Open AI file, make the necessary adjustments to raster files, and place them to the AI file.

    Voilá.

    Better TIFF than JPEG!

Your solution works, of course, but after having installed Windows and Corel you then can open the .cdr file, and you can simply save from Corel in EPS, without having to separate pixels and vectors!
