FileZilla is free and works well but I find the interface to be quite busy.

For Mac, try the beautifully designed Transmit or Forklift.

+1 for Transmit on a Mac anyway. Clients seem to understand it better then anything else I've used.

    Clients and Server

There are many free, high quality FTP client programs out there.
In my opinion, paid software might be needed only in very special cases when you need a specific feature which you know is not available in any of the free packages.
The most popular free packages have been mentioned many times in the posts in this thread.
    CyberDuck
    WinSCP
    Filezilla

Also, for those looking for a good server to host files, I would recommend having a look at CrushFTP. It is not free, but very inexpensive and extremely powerful. Not only for FTP but also HTTP, HTTPS, SFTP, FTPS, WEBDAV.
We use it to transfer graphic file to and from our customers and its fantastic.

Total Commander FTW, does all the things you need, really quick and easy.

I think it's powerful enough for any FTP client with high demands.
