I always use a combination of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

A new program that's getting a lot of hype is Sketch, but I've yet to try it out.

Illustrator all day. Sketch is mostly for UI, but definitely doable.

I know others that use 3D tools like C4D to start.

Personally I use a combo of AI + PS. PS to scan in an image and place into AI, that way I can tweak the linked file to adjust the contrast etc of my sketch dynamically based on how I've ported it over to AI.

illustrator for sure... I try to stay away from photoshop if I can. I like vector logos since there is no worry when it comes to scaling

My vote is Adobe Illustrator. In my experience it's also the most portable format among professionals.
