Can't go wrong with Comic Sans, but when that isn't applicable, I resort to something like Dekar.

It does of course depend on the style of site. Recently LATO seems to have been useful (and easy as its a google font).

When using typekit, Prenton family has been good, as it has a mid century feel that works well with artists sites.

The best of course are the Hoefler cloud fonts, optimised perfectly and look amazing. Whitney Smartscreen is a good one on there, clean but not do devoid of personality.

Open Sans with Google API is nice. But I see a problem with it being overused pretty soon.

I think it will always depend on the balance of the project's direction and the budget. You could use system fonts… it will load faster and save the project some money, in that case i would recomend something from google webfonts, like Lato, Karla or Open Sans. If you have a good budget, i think you should usually follow the typeface selected for the art direction of the project, that means, if the visual identity of the project that you made uses Aperçu, you should go with that for the site's font.

Have to agree with Open Sans. Neutral and very versatile.

I tend towards sans serif font due their better legibility on low dpi monitors, so I'll pick Apercu.

I tend to use fonts within Googles Typekit, since it free and the clients usually find it too expensive to subscribe to a font. Within google's I like Roboto the most
