I always either use Helvetica Neue or Georgia depending on what the site is for.

I used to use lot of Optimo typefaces like Theinhardt and Px Grotesk because they were part of webink.

    But since webink is closing...

On Typekit there is nice one that not many people use: Tablet Gothic.

Another affordable option is fonts from Colophon on Fontdeck.

I used to be in love with Proxima Nova. Then I fell in love with Brandon Text. Now I'm back in love with Proxima Nova.

I'm a fan of the old school serifs. Georgia, garamond, etc. But I also like Latin Modern. For sans, Open Sans is just no contest. PT Sans is alright, but I'm pretty attached to OS.

I tend to use both Open Sans or Source Sans for working up rough designs for the web – free and well designed faces. Tisa is pretty good as a serif & has lots of weights.

Actually the new Retina screens used on Adobe products have a resolution close to 300 dpi, which allows you to use about any font you want, even Didot fonts. The time where we only had to use san serif fonts is over.
Even Helvetica, which looks really bad on screens is now used as system font for MacOs Yosemite.

Actually the free Google fonts Montserrat and Raleway are pretty good.
If you are willing to pay for a font service I'd go with Proxima Nova, is a cliche nowadays but it actually works wonders, especially on mobile devices.
