in my opinion web design is not necessarily the same as coding ... Web design can just be the creation of the template in Photoshop.

many people who switch from graphic design to web design keep no account with grids ... So I think you should definitely have some research in that.

Furthermore, I think the best/easiest way is to just sit down with someone who has experience

It's not going to make you a great designer but it will make the building blocks easy to figure out.
http://www.lissaexplains.com was where I started in the 90s and I STILL use some of those techniques to this day. There are so many different platforms to choose from that have taken a lot of the guesswork out of things (Wordpress, Drupal, etc.) and there are loads of free plugins that can do the work for you. HTML will get you anywhere - at least learn the basics of tweaking it to get it to do what you want! Dreamweaver is also a great program to learn

For graphic designers wanting to create websites without learning code, try Adobe Muse. Easy to use, just like indesign and one click to see live preview.

In addition to courses/books, I think it's pretty important to have a specific website/project that you want to build in mind

It'll keep you motivated to move through the initial learning curve

I started learning web design 10 years ago through http://www.lissaexplains.com :)
Nowadays, I rely to Google for questions and tutorials. :)
