I suggest taking a class in college. There are tons of tutorials you can download. Look to wares forums and torrent sites and look up tuts+, digital tutors, lynda etc, but nothing beats having an instructor who can answer questions,

    Blogs

For a broader insight into graphic design I would suggest keeping track of design blogs like formfifty.com, iso50 and itsnicethat.com. It can help to trigger inspiration.

Red face basics come from within

I feel the fundamentals of a good Designer will always come from within and cant be taught. what you need to be taught is how to project your idea's and thought into a digital format..

When you are confident in your skills just blag your way into a job feigning all the experience you need. Just do the work, no matter how you get there, as long as you get there you are fine, since there are so many techniques in design. Maybe thats irresponsible- but that's how I did it.

There is no easy way to learn Design. To get skilled at Design, you must practice and endure years of experience, and constantly get feedback from other professionals, because what looks great to you, if shown to a professional and given feedback, may have many problems you are not able to see.

If my is an issue, I recommend investing in design theory books. Go to a nearby university with a Design program, and ask for the Professors to review your work, and take whatever feedback they give you and use it to try and improve your design.

If you have enough my, take classes at a local Art College (preferably), or a general College. Or find online classes offered from universities like Academy of Art or Rhode Island School of Design.

If you want to learn how to use the software, that is fairly easy. Learning the theory, learning what makes good design in all of its many facets, takes years of continuous study, designing, and getting feedback, then refining, and getting more feedback.

If you are passionate about Design, then dive in completely. Otherwise, you can learn the programs and get away with some hobby work, however you will not understand the fundamentals and your work will always lack the substance.

The Ambrose and Harris books (yes, books) are great for learning the fundamentals of Graphic Design. Learning the software is the easy bit.

Oh and the book called 'Graphic.'

It's a look inside sketchbooks of some awesome designers and gives you a real insight in to the process.

I find books are best for learning design concepts and theory. The following are some great design authors.

    Timothy Samara
    Kimberly Elam
    Ellen Lupton

The best way to become a better designer, imo, is to "consume" lots of great design by using a critical eye as you observe all of the design around you as you live your life.

In addition to all the great advice here, my only other suggestion is to go ahead and do it. Design, design, design. Be frustrated by your final outcome, be critical of your skills to the point of tears. You'll get better every time.
