I would read lots of books, practice with all the tools, watch lots of videos, check out lots of tutorial sites. There are a lot of good resources on this forum. Also, don't give up. You may feel like you are just copying things you have seen for a long time, but it will take awhile to develop your own style!

My motto is "learn by doing and trying".

My advices are: Don't let preconceived ideas limit you. Let your imagination flow and give yourself projects. And don't let software stop you from being creative, it's all just tools.

Computer Arts has some good tutorials, also there are good tutorials on Deviantart especially tutorials about drawing and painting. Without proper drawing skills it's 20 times harder to be good designer.

i concur. tutsplus is great. i find that having source files is the most helpful in how i learn. it's thing to watch and be told but i do better if i can also get into the file and explore it myself.

I always liked Lynda.com to get use to new programs, they give you projects to build and it helps you get used to the tools. MacProVideo.com is another good , aside from tuts and abuzeedo.

thing I heard a few years back that made doing loads and loads of tutorials bearable was to take what you learn through tutorials and come up with new, unique ways to use the information. It helped me learn the tutorial better, and I was able to come up with other actions that weren't talked about in a tutorial.
