books and resources really are the best way to learn design! examine the details, lines, spacing etc... from there just learn learn learn and do, do, do. google is your best friend. then intern at a design firm, and learn from the other designers. its incredible what others can teach you in as far as shortcuts that you'd otherwise never know.

Ive found the writings of Josef Muller Brockman and Massimo Vignelli very helpful.
Check out grid systems in graphic design by the former, and design for non profit organizations by the latter (and everything else by the pair of them)

How to be a graphic designer without losing your soul is a great book on the "business" / jop side of the field. really really is a must-read. Graphic design theory is also great, a collection of essays from notable designers from Jan Tschischold right up to the present day.

The new typography by the aforementioned Tischold is a design bible, although he himself stated he was too strict, and by his later years seems to have completely give up on his own manifesto.

Designing programmes by Karl Gerstner (if you can get find it in English) gives a great system of how to approach a project, by doing it thoroughly and systemattically.

Going to college, or university will help, but really its just a way for you to spend 3 years without having to worry about a job on the side, giving you the time to teach yourself. It wasnt at all as I expected, I didnt engage very well with it, but it gave me the time and the resources to teach myself.

    Good luck!
