Designing our own fonts in Photoshop

I want to learn how to design fonts on my own. Is there a course I can take up? Or is it fairly simple?

I'm fairly proficient with Photoshop, would be great if I can design my own fonts there

Here's a list of free tools for creating fonts

Here's an article that should be helpful:

    http://mashable.com/2011/11/17/free-font-creation-tools/

Also, if you have an ipad, there's....an app for that (I think it's under $5).

    Ipad App for creating fonts

Sorry about the previous post, the ipad app is $6.99 ( I think it started out cheaper) and you can preview it and view/download fonts others have made using the app (for free) here:

Why Photoshop? You can use Illustrator and export the curves to FontLab, but better to start in FontLab at all..

Photoshop is not very good at vector graphics, and fonts are vectors. There is some software out there that makes very rough fonts (more like stamps of each letter) from raster graphics, but making real fonts require quite a bit of knowledge regarding kerning and hinting, I suggest reading a book on it

Sorry for the question, but why you want to make fonts with Photoshop and not some other (more useful in making fonts) software?

It's the first time I heard of somebody that wants to make fonts with PS, and I'm curious of the reason behind this decision.

Back in topic: I think you should use the vector tool that's in PS, but I've no clue then on how to export the font as font format...

As others have said, Photoshop is just about the worst tool for font this. Stick to Illustrator, Sketch, or some other vector creation software and then pull it into FontForge or something of the like.

I would also recommend a different program than PS,
and if you want a helpful step-to-step guide I would recommend
a book by Karen Cheng called Designing type

it has been out of print but is now back in stock.

you need to learn the basics of typography first to know the structure of fonts, and then the rest really comes down to software, try this http://www.fontlab.com/font-editor/fontographer/

For hand-drawn fonts, I use Photoshop to just clean the unnecessary lines or marks. Then use Illustrator to create an outline using the points/paths.
