I´m using FontExplorerX since the first version, and have to say that it is in my opinion one of the best software since it has the backup-feature. So even if there is a fatal crash you could easily recover your font-setup. And for me as a typographer it is normally a waste of 2-3 days to set it up manually.
Also the feature of Active groups is pretty usefull, just tagging a font and it appears on this group...

I also often solving this problem and it looks that software FontMatch do the best job, but I cannot find full version for the best results.

You can also try http://www.identifont.com/identify.html or http://www.fonts.com/ or http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/ for indentify your font - sometimes it has good results...

IMHO
MacOS standart utility is good enough. It contains all options of TypeManager. There is no need to use other special tools

Thumbs up Nexusfont

If you use a PC then I recommend Nexusfont. Its the absolute best font manager for PC. I have over 10,000 fonts and Nexusfont manager handles them exceptionally, plus its free.

This program even beats all those over priced ones you have to pay to use.

Thanks for turning me onto Type DNA. I'm currently using the trial, I had not heard of it. I use a licensed copy of FontExplorer X but I'm always interested in finding better tools.

I have no complaints about FontExplorer X however it seems the Fontmanagement software never really developed in the past 15 years. It's still just a library with examples and activation/deactivation. FontExplorer X does deliver some good font inspection tools that can come in handy. All in all it's a stable tool, but I'll give Type DNA a try for it's 'creative' features. Let's see what it can do.

I'm using NexusFont and it's really cool! You can manage fonts easily: delete, change name, group...
Just cons:
- You spend a lot of time grouping fonts
- Sometimes it crashes...

After several years in the graphics field, and after having installed and tried many font management software, I definitively recommend the InsiderSoftware products.

But you also need to know the good practices that any user should to know to avoid some strange behavior on his own OS.
”It is important that you know where you come from, because if you do not know where you come from,
then you don’t know where you are, and if you don’t know where you are, then you don’t know where you’re going.
And if you don’t know where you’re going, you’re probably going wrong .”
