Animated photo in Photoshop / After Affects

Found this short via reddit last week which I hope you enjoy if you haven't already seen it.

As a web developer I haven't really found a reason to use After Effects that much but this seems like a great training exercise.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVrYyX3bHI8

"Learn how to create motion in still photographs, a technique made popular in the film The Kid Stays In The Picture. In the tutorial above, Joe Fellows shows us how he's able to bring photos to life using the parallax effect with Photoshop and After Effects."

After Effects is great for creating the Ken Burns FX with photographs.

If you already know your way around after effects a bit, this is a great tool that shaves some time to get the same effect.

Many effects into AE can be created starting 2 basic lessons:
1 - Z depth and all related issues
    2 - camera (AE)

Most of time you do not need scripts. Anyway, when needed, try to use JavaScript for AE (ECMA Script). Good luck.

... if only those 2 things were explained as "basic lessons". AE cameras have come a long way but still use a funky reference to "position" & "orientation" when trying to animate them. Of course you can do everything manually but there's a handful of scripts that I seriously don't understand why Adobe hasn't embedded into the app because they save me sooo much time day 2 day.

    Dear 713mybaad,

I am so sorry if the "basic lessons" sounds... hmmm... pedantic.
Well, many scripts can be created using JS for AE (as I said before, ECMA Script).

No need to be apologize, we're basically talking about the same thing - the majority of automated scripts (like the one I mentioned) are using the same JS scripting language within the program (like you suggested). The only difference is they have a handy side panel for adjustments and they automate some of the heavy-lifting (in some cases). Is it good to know the basics and fundamentals of whats going on under the hood... of course it is. I'm just pointing out that once you "know your way around after effects a bit" it doesn't hurt to be efficient.

Great book recommendation, I have a copy and reference it regularly.

these can come in handy as well - http://www.graymachine.com/2010/04/my-top-expressions/

expanding the idea further, camera projection inside AE & other 3d programs are worth looking into
