    Alternative to Adobe Programs

Can anyone recommend a real alternative to Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign?

I've heard Affinity programs are good – what do you think?

    there is no REAL alternative!

ask yourself why so many people are using the adobe suite.

all other software products are cheap copies of adobe products
which are not 100% compatible in dealing with PDF.

Affinity has been getting some great reviews in the Mac world. The thing I'd worry about is workflow (and my old Adobe files!!!) -- can you import Adobe files and work on them in Affinity/export from Affinity and work on them in Adobe?

    Affinity is a joke!

no multiple pages, no spot colors, no LAB colors, no overprint, no bleeds, no hyphenation. etc.

its a toy compared to adobe suite!

Coreldraw beats Illustrator hands down for all kinds of reasons

Photopaint I am not so sure. Photoshop is the best bitmap editor I think

Long document has to be Indesign. Pagemaker is dead and Quark has not kept up

    yeah, of course!

especially when it comes to import/export of PDF!

corel draw is a big piece of dog poo!
can't open standard PDF files reliably
and PDF output from corel is not usable in prepress at all!

Obviously the 10's of thousands of jobs I have done and several hundreds km of films and plates made must be a figment of my imagination. My apologies. I bow before your mighty knowledge

On second thoughts I stick with my original remark

nobody mentioned Gimp? It's open source alternative to Photoshop. Haven't used it but if you want free soft like photoshop it's worth a try.

if you use the File>Publish to PDF command, you can then, open that PDF in Illy and re-export as an esko normalized PDF for production, or any other 'normalized' PDF or PS mode you prefer.

I'm a production man, with a couple of years on the printing business, i don't draw or create pretty stuff with a computer, i make designers arts 'printable' and print them, be it in digital, conventional offset, flexo, gravure, offset litho, silk, etc. and IMHO, when it comes to production (industrial production), Illy seconds to none, i remember liking some corel functions back when i worked mostly for digital printers in small/medium printshops, but nothing that makes a difference nowadays.

yes, but you can't do todays job with yesterdays software and still expect to be in business tomorrow.

Adobe software is IT, and it's an 'industry standard', and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that, just look at the 'compatibility' issues, take Kodak, Esko, etc. do you see them working with Corel apart from basic plugins and PPD's?

Back on topic: what about my vectorizing all-time favorite (and nowadays a nice piece of freeware) Macromedia/Adobe Freehand MX?

    cheers

Tried to use Affinity, and while it seems to be solid, I'm so used to Illustrator now I struggled on some stuff. I guess I'm a creature of habit, Illustrator it is for me.
