    Alternate to InDesign?

A friend of mine was wondering if there were any viable alternates to InDesign (that are currently maintained and updated). I can't think of any, but perhaps there's some on your radar?

Serif PagePlus is the only other one I can think of. But honestly, what reason can you give NOT to use InDesign? By far the best application I've ever used for page layout.

I'd say QuarkXpress but it's much more expensive :)

    Thanks.

I'm quite fond of InDesign, and use it frequently, I was talking to someone that doesn't have any of the Creative Suite, and doesn't want to spend the money on it, but couldn't think of any real alternatives. I've heard of Quark, but thought it was obsolete (though that page doesn't want to actually let me buy the software at all).

I know that in my country are some places where they prefer Quark instead of InDesign but I don't know the reason... And it's quite funny that the add to cart button on their web doesn't work http://shop.quark.com/ew/p-26-quarkxpress-10-europe-edition.aspx Probably they assume that the price is so high that nobody wants to buy it :)

Are we looking on the same product? QuarkXPress 10 Europe Edition costs €1400 ~ 1700 USD. WTF? I hate double prices :))

Quark Xpress 10 America Edition. Only explination I can think of is that the European edition has expanded language support hence the difference in price? Still though - DOUBLE the price??? I agree, WTF.

    InDesign

Wow, everything is so expensive these days. I guess I would rather pay Creative Cloud fee and have access to everything Adobe offers (including InDesign) rahter than pay a huge flat fee for one program like Quark. Def a lose lose situation tho. Hopefully the Sketch of InDesign is coming soon.
