Advice on Setting Up and Running an Independent Studio?

    Hey guys,

just wondering if there are any independent studio owners on this site, that can share a few stories about how they setup themselves up etc.

Tips & advice would be much appreciated

You have to be more of a business owner and not just the designer, and this is where a lot of people crumble.

Don't be afraid to outsource some of the works, this may sound counter intuitive, but if things are getting out of hand, you want to sacrifice your profit margin a bit in order to keep things under control so you can run a proper business.

Eventually you want to be able to purely be a business owner and not an employee of the studio. For example, you should be able to take holidays without thinking too much about the studio.

Start with a low overhead. Don't overhire, don't spend on designer chairs and stuff. You'll know when you can buy those things. Trust me.

First, go out! Second, get clients! Talk with people! Here in Calabria from Italy works in this way! They don't concern about design, but about their business. You have to demonstrate how to help they in that. You are first an account, next to a business man, next to a designer, also a project manager and in many cases a presenter! Good Luck!
