I've tried SolidWorks, Cinema4D and 3DSMax. I prefer 3DSMax though. It was easier to learn for me than C4D.

I recommend you C4D. Easy curve of learning with fast and great results.
I started 3D with Lightwave in a G4. Then I jumped to a windows platform x64 and use 3DMax. Now again with a Mac Pro I work fine with C4D.

Sketchup is pretty good for starting and you can use it for free (noncommercially)
Rhino for Mac is advanced and you can use the beta for free as well right now! Rhino is used by a lot of architects at the moment.

    Cinema 4D.
It's easier to learn, compered to Maya, Max, Modo...
have many presets - materials, light scenes, render setups, etc...

it all depends what you're going to be doing and what you're learning it for for motion graphics i'd say cinema 4d! its also becoming more common practice for work on films like tron and prometheus both used it. for visual effects i'd learn maya or houdini.
