More often than not, I use ornaments/dingbats that come with font families. Some of my favorite fonts with ornaments are Bergamot, Samantha Script, Cantoni, Wishes Script, and Alek!

I agree with jamiebergeron. Laura Worthington fonts come with awesome dingbats that come with the fonts. I'm addicted to all of her flourishes and some new ones like Cantoni. You can generally get some great dingbats for free. :)

Can anyone recommend a map-oriented (e.g., directions, arrows, signs, etc.) dingbat font?

Favorite dingbat font? Probably "Greeting Cards" by Laura Worthington. It's all fancy hand-lettered versions of common words and phrases.

Most deff. font awesome and thenounproject for individual symbols.

On the more standard font format i'd say I like the style of Veneer Extras although the number of glyphs is quite short.

    Dingbats.

This is an extract of the Helvetica documentary...sometimes dingbats can be used in creative ways.
