I guess every CTP has it's market. It just depends on what quality needs to be achieved.

    Inkjet CTP

There is another developer for InkJet CTP. When you use ColorGate System you don't need any special inks, everything is printed on Epson 7900 with original inks. I tested it for two times, prints are OK in full color.
In ColorGate system there are AM and FM screening and system produce very good plates. I tested plates in print with Heidelberg GTO and image ARE stabile. If there are some problems there are not in images area.

Epson's standard ink for their x900 series printers. Nothing special about the CTP inkset.

    Epson Target Specific Market

This is phenomenal for small print houses with 1 to 2 color machines.
Why invest on something you will not use.

Question: Can existing owners of the 79 just order the caliper or eXpressCTP rip separately? Or the curing unit itself?

We are not talking about thermal CTP and productivity.
We are talking about inkjet CTP and its plate’s quality in printing process.
For price of 12.000 euros ColorGate Ink jet CTP, gives very good quality.

    Coating

Hi, how did the experiment go? I believe you need to coat the plate emulsion first before printing, otherwise it will not hold ink well. I believe synthetic gum should suffice. You may want to try an inkjet specific rip such as wasatch sp or accurip to control amount of ink. Also dye based ink should give you better result. just my 2 cents.

I am currently really use inkjet CTP, the desktop machine is EPSON1390 and a 7900 machines, 7900 of the normal print a 12 minutes (linked to the AM 180 lpi) did not PASS pattern, 1390 linked to the AM 160 lpi without twill, A3 to 14 minutes . Drive is based on the Founder PSPNT3.0. Interchangeable ink channel. MEDIABOP software is also good, can be linked to the AM 200 lpi, to meet the printing requirements.Other software is also played, but not always hang on the 180 lpi is not smooth, and PASS pattern.
Film using a waterproof film, using a water-based ink plate.

but main question is such ctp can do 4color job and how is the Tonal Value?
    Most ink-jet is divided into
1 print categories: software MEDIABOP, PSPNT3.0. Fully meet the 80-180 line AM
2 printing software category is represented by 80-100 WASATCH line.
3 Software to powrrip screen as the representative of 80-133 lines.

In PlateWriter 3000, they're using Epson Stylus Pro 7700. It had been customized for platewriting and it works well. I saw it in my own two eyes and had even operated sometimes.
