It depends on what you are printing:

For expensive and quality product you should use Thermal technology (which is expensive for itself)

For mass production it will be better use conventional technology
For some kind of newspapers use UV

if you use cheap plate(taiwan indian,chinese..),i suggest thermal ctp...
otherwise ultraviolet(conventional) is suitable for you.

    Thermal tehnology is the best

Thermal tehnology is the best. I had in the past firts Cymbolic Scince CTP wich has Green Yag laser th CTP was very relayble but operator had to work on red light room.
Then I have Basys Print 710 UV setter wich was running with cheep conventional plates but was very tempreature sensitive and very slow.
After that I had Agfa Galileo VS 8 Violet CTP wich was very fast but the chemistry and plates was expensive. Then I go to Thermal Screen CTP is very relible mashine easy to operate. In now date the price for thermal paltes are very close to the normal conventional plates.May be the Luecher UV CTP is better but the price is extremly expensive and also the price for UV diodes is very high.In my opinion Thermal is the best.

If the Machine is in the press building, Termal is better. (You don't need a room with yellow light, is awfull)
For prepress bureau service, I agree with ilkerinanc that uv is better for the price.

i think thermal will be leader technology for these reasons
1.plate cost will be so cheap in the future
2.recorder cost is chip than another technology
    3.process less plate available
    3.no need yellow light
    ...

    My opininon

In Quallity thermal is the best technology, but the price of the convencional plate for CTP is about 25%-35% cheaper.

The problem is that the Conventional CTPs (Cron, Basysprint or Lüescher) are very expensive (almost double than the Thermal ones) and some of them are still trying to get the right stability.

Also the UV Plates are prepare to be used maybe at maximum 150lpi and 2400x2400
As somebody told you, perfect condition for newspaper (100 lpi - 1270x1270)

PD.- There will be in less than one year Procesless plates for three technologies working nice.

I think the price of the plate dependa only of the production. That means in a near future maybe the price of the termal plate was reduced and the price of convencional platee was increased. The price of the special laser for convencional plates in Ctp is very expensive. Probably if you buy a Ctp for conventional plate will have problems to retiene the investment.
