Indesign cs3-5 has a feature (forgot its name) where you can connect to an textfile with values, these are automatically inserted in your doc when exporting to PDF.

Options for VDP (they are oftern RIP dependant)

You can do this with indesign CS5 and a copy of excell. check out the "Data Merge" function.

If more sophistication is required or your trying to interact with a VDP optimized RIP.
    ie( PPML = open source Fiery/EFI , VIPP = Xerox , VDP = Creo)

Then you will need a program with a license that is optimized for the technology your RIP
(ie Fiery, DocuSP Xerox, Creo) etc uses

The products supporting these technologies are Fusion Pro, Creo Darwin (although i dont think it works with CS5 yet), Printshop Mail , and XMpie etc.

If you have any other questions relating to these technologies please PM me

    CS5 for complicated numbering

You can do this in CS5 and as long as you have a copy of excell you can produce most conditional statements.

Google the Datamerge function, it allows for both numbering naming and images.

In terms of expressions, this can be done in Excell if you need help with that leave me a pm

PS i haven't found anything i can work around in excel yet, however if you want to optimize Ripping etc. you will need to use, Fiery's freeform in the first instance, or a product that outputs PPML (Fiery and others) ViPP if you have this licensed from Xerox, IDPS if you are using OCE or some of the other faster engines, Oh Creo uses a protocol called VDP. I new there was one i missed out
