    My faves

It really depends on what your project is. I do a lot of web design, flyers & restaurant menus and Illustrator + Indesign are my go-tos. I avoid Photoshop like the plague, but I think it's because I'm just far less comfortable with it. Also, idk how much web stuff you do, but Espresso & Coda are nice replacements for Dreamweaver, which has gotten ridiculously bloated. They are less intuitive, but when you get over the learning curve they're pretty efficient.

    Possible alternatives

I use Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign but very tempted by the Affinity software – Designer as a replacement for Illustrator. Can anyone recommend any other alternatives? I've heard Sketch is good

I agree. For layout I use InDesign although I used to use Quark.

Affinity Designer is very very good. It can open Illustrator files but i wouldnt trust it.
It's actually much faster than Illustrator CC 2015 for me.

I got Affinity Photo too, which is not bad.

Obvious choices would be Illustrator and Photoshop.
But once in a while, I tinker with few ipad apps. ProCreate
It's quite amazing how far ipad apps have come
