How Do You Test Drive a Font?

    Sup Peeps,

What's your process for test driving a new font for a project (ie. a brand identity)? Aside from buying it upfront, is there some clever way to do a mockup?

A lot of font webstores let you preview fonts with a custom text within the store. You can then screenshot that section of the screen and place it in your design, or sometimes, you can actually drag the image file containing the preview text directly into your design (I know that this works with FontShop, it may work on other sites). This only really works for shorter text (headlines, logos, etc.). FontShop and Fonts.com also have plugins/utilities that allow you to preview fonts from their stores. You could also just download the font from a site like PrintRoot then buy it if you decide to use it.

ditto Emuboy! That is exactly what I do - take a screenshot or simply save the "test drove" text I entered as an image file.

Obviously you have to explain resolution to clients so they don't think that the pixelated font they are seeing is actually like that once purchase.

What I do sometimes is typing a few words in sample text part of a website like MyFonts, and then drag that into illustrator to rearrange the text.

    Test a font

You can simply contact the designer of the font and try to negotiate a preview, or a test version !
Some foundry like Swisstypefaces let the customers download for free trial version !
