Yes. Definitely illustrator. The main thing you want, is the logo to be a vector format compared to a raster format. This way you can scale it to any size and the lines will stay crisp and sharp.

Also a nice thing if you go into logos and you know to draw it's to use a pencil and a paper after the ideea comes, to put it on the paper in the form of a sumar sketch and then scan it and master it in Illustrator or what vector program it's best for you.
It's always harder to draw directly on the computer even if the ideea it's in the head, a rough sketch on paper will do magic !

I always start with drawing the first idea's on paper. After sketching I scan my designs and open them in illustrator to create them in vector.

I start in illustrator, or occasionally photoshop if it's more complicated.

You could use illustrator, coreldraw or online logo creator. The ooutput must be vector and bitmap for the preview. You also can gain ideas by viewing another logo from various designer in logopond.com so your design will enrich and get the best alternative for the project.

illustrator is useful, but sometimes those curves are hard to handle.
i always start with a rough sketch,...when i said rough it's really rough.
i find drawing on paper is faster than in computer.

scan your rough sketch, open illustrator and just trace which lines you want
    and improvise

    hope this helps :)

there are tons of video on you tube about logo design from scratch. briefing, research, brainstorm, sketching, and so on as other fellow designer mentioned here, however what really matter about logo is the idea/ concept you offer to your client. your skill using graphic software (ai, corel, etc) is always help to get better result but that as not as important as creativity in your mind.
