A simple and really reliable font manager is Linotype FontExplorer.
The first version was freely ditributed by Linotype and still works well for me with MacOS 10.8
There was a windows version as well.
The last version are not freeware but if you need basic font management, the v1.23 is good

I have suitcase fusion 5 and have been very happy with it.. particularly like that it can load web fonts (from google and such) alongside my OTF fonts for web mockups.

Suitcase Fusion has a nice auto add font plugin for indesign.

I also like the font browsing to find certain fonts.

For me the faster and better is MAIN TYPE you can view a custom preview of all the fonts in a folder without installing them.

I don't feel like there is a 100% great thing out there for this. I have used TypeDNA which is nice and now I have Suitcase Fusion which is also nice. The best part about these is that they have plug ins for Photoshop. The only issue with Suitcase is the previews in the plug in are small and hard to see. Also, I have used FontBook which is standard on the MAC. It's great for simple use, but it takes a long time to organize it. Also, if you download a font sometimes, the preview for the font won't show up in FontBook.
