    qtr vs efi

If you know how to use QTR it's ok but personnaly i think that EFI express is more straight forward using

EFI is a good solution because of the combination of color quality and ease of use, and if you add an X-Rite SpectroProofer, you have a fully automated verification and optimization solution.

Try Qimage, it's great for working with large files and it removes the lenght limitation in epson's driver (using banner mode)

If you're only working on black & white files you can of course use qimage with b&w profiles created with QTR.

EFI is the best choice. QTR is not an option for professional work.
Driver is certainly a better option than QTR.
ONYX supports 9900. I have a printer 9900 and printed with ONYX X10. Well printed with RGB profiles from the site of ONYX. As ONYX, and EFI have direct printing using RGB profiles and has no problem with the size of print.

I have been looking at the Epson 9900 as our next proofer to replace our 9800. Do you like option that it has to self calibrate? From what I read, once you profile it, it has a built in control strip to maintain the calibration. Do you find that it works?

If you do certified proofing, then yes. If you use it for art printing, no sense of profilator built. Once out of the printer color tables, can not be read again. In a good and cheaper option is a separate proofer (iO example). The idea is to what use it.

May be even not Photoshop, but Lightroom. It has very good print module.
New beta version of Lightroom 4 has very interesting softproof implementation.

For photo only you might not need a RIP, its primary for PostScript output. But if you can find a working version of EFI Colorproof around here you are all ready to go. Epson bundles EFI Colorproof or eXpress in their designer editions.
