No problems and everything is transparent.
What do you mean by everything is transparent?

    PDF/X-1a does not permit transparency.

    How?

    Consider this workflow:

    1. Design and layout (AI, Corel, PS, etc. then layout in Indesign, or Quark, etc.)
    2. Create PDF/X. Choose from x-1a, x-3, or x-4 preset.

Where will be the designer can get wrong?

Your capability will dictate which PDF/X standards to use. With the right tool, it does not matter whether you accept X-4 or X-1a. If your workflow do not have APPE (Adobe PDF Print Engine), then your end product is PDF/X-1a. If you do not want to do the extra work such as flattening, then you should ask your customers to send PDF/X-1a.

IMHO, beside live transparency, the most important issue about PDF/X-4 is color management.

    Ask your clients to
check transparency flattener settings. GWG recommends this:

    Raster/Vector balance: 100
Line art and text res: 2400
    Gradient and mesh res: 449

    Hope that helps.

    PDFX1a

Always used only PDFX1a with all my vendor. More than 300 jobs and never had issues.

From my experience as a graphic designer and customer of several different service bureaus, when I ask them which type of pdf to use, they all want the PDF/X-1a or the Press quality preset for pdfs.

I will usually ask clients for 3 files when possible:

    TIFF Low resolution
    PDF/X-1a
PDF latest supported version by their software.

Most of the time PDF/X-1a is sufficient, but the TIFF helps identify potential issues and if there are any the latest format file can be used to get things fixed inhouse without bothering clients.
