    Magenta

A few weeks ago I saw a demo of a new program called Magenta.
The program was able to cope with ALL of the complicated print jobs that we were able to throw at it.
They are just starting to market in Europe, so if you live in Europe - I would highly recommend getting in touch with them.

here in our country, automatic print costing doesn't make that much sense. manual is still the way to go.

My boss used an excel spreadsheet for years, till he employed someone to put it all in Fliemaker. He needed something customised for digital printing. Big difference estimating ink - plates to digital click rates.

    Cool Business Manager

Business Manager is easy to configure and use. It gives a direct price comparison of digital to litho, indicating where the price crossover is. Really useful when you have multiple pieces of kit.

    Price estimating

I'm using graphisoft from raphso since 8 years.
for the begining it was just to estimate the price, but today it's working as a MIS

Estimating software is very useful, but we havne't found something that we can just use out of the box.

That's why we still need a "sanity check" excel sheet that calculates paper, prepress, press-time, and other labour costs just to see if we are in the ballpark.

Then we cross-reference with our 'market pricing' excel sheet that has some pricing we have researched from competitors in our same market.

Pain in the butt, yes. But we have not found a foolproof solution that handles everything and gives us piece of mind that we are making money on jobs and still being competitive.

I will have try our some of the suggestions in this thread though... thanks.

I can't believe I have never thought of this before! What an excellent idea, I will have put the tables into my iWorks Numbers spreadsheet to give instant price comparisons against selected competitors asap.

    Thanks
