Send as jpg, max. 120dpi, RGB.
This is the worst way to send something to print.
Some people dont want to pay designers...

If you send PDF (and they send it forwarded for printing) I could hack it, and I could fix it with pitstop. RGB will be converted to cmyk, black text to 100K and overprint, bleed fixed/added, crop marks added. Thats all. Almost the same...
    So we will print it.

Over 200 dpi we wont have major problems.

you can secure your file with multiple passwords
to open and another to edit or print
just use the acrobat pro version, you will have all the security options in following order
    advanced> security> password encrypt

you will define a password to open the file
or to prevent editing of printing
you can use only the password to prevent printiing

Yeah, thats what I usually do. But I'm fortunate enough to have Acrobat Pro at work. I wonder how easy/difficult it would be for some to get around the password restriction though.

Password protecting seems like a somewhat aggressive route.

I always go for the low res version if I don't want it printed.

Send it with a great big watermark on top. It sucks, but it's the best way to protect your work.
