to receive print artwork, you can ask them to send a jdf file as well pdf file? in this case as you would use this file. Thank you for your interest!

No. JDF-Files only contain the information for each step in your workflow what to do with the oncoming data i.e. rip, arrange etc.

PDF files contain the data of the object you want to print.

JDF is XML standar based language, (JOB Definition Format), used for comunicate all device in print industry.

PDF/X files is the option for comunicate Desktop aplication with your Printshop, JDF is for comunicate all planed information to your devices, inside the plant, and you can recibe feedback from your device in JMF format.

You can found more information and JDF partner in CIP3.org

Only advantage of JDF and JMF is standar and is write in open lenguage, XML, this is very important, but to be XML format, is open, and any programer people can write interface for your specific software or device.

I was wondering if anyone new how or had a tool to export JDF ticket from FileMaker Pro?
I created our order tracking system in FileMaker Pro and our RIP (Onyx) now sort of supports JDF.
I would like to be able to send it a ticket with our job info. So far i have the JDF specs but its a hard read.
FMP can export an XML file but im unclear on how to format it.
Ive heard that there are some plugins for FMP but have yet to find one.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Anyone actually use JDF?

I am curious, does anyone actually use JDF in its entirety? I have heard shops successfully implement into post press, but as for using it throughout the entire process...?

Yes, I use it with success... as said previously... it's a standardized XML file... therefore, you can pick up many information from the JDF file that is continuously updated by the JMF.

Something important to keep in mind is that if it's very interesting to understand how JDF works... it's not required to use it... you do not have to write a JDF file by yourself... software have the painful duty ;)

    You would need an XSLT

The XML in JDF is quite complex and you would need a XSLT to convert Filemakers default output XML into something structured to JDF conventions. This XSLT would be worth it's weight in gold and to write it would take a long time. A few years ago, I searched for such an XSLT but never found anything. In the end I gave up, trashed our FMP order tracking system and our company bought a ready made system (which, by the way, doesn't work as well as the Filemaker and doesn't work with JDF)
