Are you using a mask to hide the background pattern?

you have to create a particular EPS for XPress, i think that's the problem...try to create a PDF from Illustrator and then impose the PDF in Xpress. At the end export the final PDF from Xpress...

It depends on the software you use to create the EPS...to avoid any problem...i suggest you to create a good PDF and impose the PDF...

    Quark problem

Do the imposition in illustrator if you dont have any other software than quark.

You don't have, by any chance, set the pattern-stroke set to overprint right? (check if there's -no- checkmark in front of Stroke in Window/Attributes)

Even back to the Quark 4 days, I always had issues with EPS files in Quark.

Maybe import as PDF into Quark?

Try to throw it into distiller directly. Same results than, within eps file is something wrong. If not, something between quark and pdf production is wrong.

Well, the workflow of the old school (before Indesign revolution) was to use a EPS Printer to create a PS file and then use Distiller. The Bottleneck is to find a good EPS Printer. Try here:

My best suggestion is to advice you to switch to Indesign and you will have and easier life
