For me Adobe Acrobat is the best... For simple actions Foxit is ok.

I tend to use Acrobat but that's because I've never really needed or searched for anything else.

I find Adobe Photoshop to be the best .pdf writer. Quick and easy.

I use Acrobat Pro or Photoshop depending on what my end goal is. I've found the file sizes to be much larger on multi page PDFs created in Acrobat v. the ones I make in PS.

Acrobat Pro and Preview both have a save optimized feature that compresses pdfs

If you're willing to invest the time to learn the coding language, programs (generally freeware, such as Texshop) that utilize XeLateX and/or LuaLateX are great for rendering articles and e-books.

Though this method is not as efficient as acrobat and indesign for single page documents.

I tried adobe preview at first and I'we lost lots of time, then was adobe illustrator, but it has a pretty messy interface for such tasks IMHO

Then I revealed a Keynote and a Text Editor for Mac (oh yeah!), but it couldn't be better than InDesign and a control it gives over creating multipage filesystems
