I use Color Solutions basICColor Display v5.0.1 on NEC monitor with I1pro(1). I have also calibrate monitor wiht ArgillCMS, but Bassiccolor is far more simply.

Basiccolor Display has great options, supports tons of meters, AND can do hardware calibration on most NEC monitors-- I'm really liking it

I think a calibrated monitor, even if you have a high-end Eizo wont help you much, as far as printing goes, unless you have a professional workflow setup.
I used to work for a color management company, and my boss said, that for most people Xrite's Huey is well enough - it goes for around $100. He also said that the Colormunki from Xrite has the same sensor as the Eye-, it's only limited in software.

    2-3

I use Monaco or PM 5 for monitor calibration with an i1pro

I cant really tell the difference in monitor profiles. Both come out very accurate
