You can't go wrong with v2 profiles, since every application will support them. The same is NOT true - even if the manufacturer claims v4 support.

I personally have had too many compatibility faults with applications not accepting icc4 profiles. The benefits of ICC4 in contrast to the compatibility are not that great ....

Most RIP works prefectly with the Version 2.

I have had a lot of trouble with the version 4.

Versaworks, colorgate, EFI, wasatch as far as I know won't work with the version 4.

    ColorGate ICC v4 compatibility

    Hi.

    You can use v2 or v4 ICC in ColorGate v5, v6 & v7.

I'm personally tested the compatibility and they work fine.

Monaco GamutWorks doesn't like V4 either. On the other hand, v4 does have PRMG...
Also had probs with ArgyllCMS tools (viewgam etc) to convert/display v4 profiles. On the other hand, i1Profiler recommends creating v4 (it's also set as the default).

Don't forget about "Oh yeah, can you also apply to my..."

Another reason to stick with version 2 is the fact that many times after you have "completed" your task, there can be requests to also apply the new profile to color copier, etc.

Oh, I think I know what you're talking about now... You're referring to SWOP paper types, correct? I think you're a bit confused here as that is not the same as the ICC version of the profile (*.icc/*.icm) file itself. There is no such thing as an ICC v3 or ICC v5 profile, only v2 and v4.
