ProfileMaker and MonacoProfiler are both superseded by i1Profiler which has a Simple Mode for beginners. And it's Prism engine is far superior. It doesn't have all the tools (no profile editing, no averaging...) but for a beginner those are not needed.

Alternatively ArgyllCMS is free, it's very powerful, but it's a set of command-line tools so its not easy to begin with, but the community behind it is very helpful and there is lot of help in the docs.

I have Datacolor Spyder3 Studio SR 'n' pretty happy about it... this about an option to X-Rite; are you in need of profiling CMYK printers??

The i1 has licenses for those options. When you buy one u should know whats the licenses included. I think all off them can calibrate monitors.

The password that is asked is the license in upgrade. You can buy from Gretag upgrades for your i1.

Check if the software you are using is compatible with your system. I know that have been many changes in the Gretag software because MacOS 10.7.

    I]Upgrade - i1Basic to new i1Basic Pro?

Question: I have an i1, which includes a license for the Monitor Module in the i1Match Software (i1Basic product, received in a bundle with a Printer or RIP). How can I upgrade to i1Basic Pro, so that I can use my existing i1 with the Monitor Module (only) in the new i1Profiler software?

Answer: This is an upgrade free of charge. The Monitor license in your existing i1 will also license the Monitor Module in the new i1Profiler software. You would just need to download and install the new software (i1Profiler
    ). [/I]

I do agree, there are more option if you upgrade from basic to pro version other that monitor profiling , printer is also applicable

Based on the ease of use and features I would suggest you to use:

i1Match (if your i1Pro can unlock required features)
Monaco Profiler Platinum (wizard based interface)
GretagMachbeth ProfileMaker 5.0.10 (you will have to read help file)

Also try new i1Profiler, but I don't think there is "free" version on the net yet.

x-rite software require codes to enable profiling.

Color Eyes Display Pro is the best screen profiling software I have come across in recent time. Easy to use and great results.
